ROCKY RIPPLE SPRING 2026 SAFETY LETTER

Dear Rocky Ripple Resident,

Spring has arrived in our community and with it comes warmer days, blooming trees, and exciting outdoor activities. With this Spring Safety Letter, we want to take a moment to share some important safety reminders to help every member of our community feel prepared.

Storm Preparedness

Indiana spring weather can change quickly. Severe thunderstorms, high winds and the occasional tornado are all part of life. Please take the following steps to protect your family:

  • Sign up for Marion County emergency alerts at the City of Indianapolis’ website or by texting MESAINDY to 67283.
  • Subscribe to Town of Rocky Ripple notifications on our website.
  • Identify a safe interior room on your home’s lowest floor in the event of a tornado warning.
  • Keep a basic emergency kit stocked with water, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.
  • Trim dead or overhanging branches near your home before storm season peaks.
  • Pick a safety buddy! Make a plan to get in touch in the event of emergency. For neighbors who may need extra time and assistance, work with neighbors, the Town Board or the Town Marshal for support.

Rain and Standing Water

Spring rains can cause water pooling, especially in low-lying areas of town. A few important reminders:

  • Never drive through flooded roadways — just six inches of moving water can knock a person down, and two feet can carry away most vehicles.
  • Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Empty flowerpots, birdbaths, and other containers regularly.

Living on the White River, we have a front row seat to the impact of spring rains on the water table. You can follow NOAA’s river projections as measured by the gauge at Nora. You can also learn more about Rocky Ripple’s response to elevated water events on the RREM/CERT section of our website. In the event of heightened risk, RREM/CERT’s color code signage will be posted around the neighborhood to help keep residents informed and prepared.

Trimming Vegetation Near Roadways

As plants and shrubs come back to life this spring, overgrown vegetation along roadways and intersections can become a serious safety hazard. Branches, hedges and woody shrubs that extend into or over the roadway can block drivers’ sightlines and create blind spots at corners and driveways. Property owners are responsible for maintaining vegetation on their own land that borders public roads. Please take a moment this season to:

  • Cut back any shrubs, hedges, or low-hanging branches that extend over the sidewalk, curb or travel lane. Now is the perfect time to do this before spring is in full bloom!
  • Clear vegetation within ten feet of intersections and stop signs so that drivers and pedestrians have an unobstructed view in all directions.
  • Trim plants near driveways so that vehicles entering or exiting can see oncoming traffic and pedestrians clearly.

Road Traffic Safety

Please make sure to follow posted traffic signs and stick to the speed limit. Remind your loved ones to wear a helmet when riding a bike and to be attentive to vehicular traffic while out enjoying the spring weather.

Testing the Town Hall Horn

A test of the Rocky Ripple Town Hall horn is planned for Friday, April 10th at 12:00pm at the Rocky Ripple Town Hall. The horn on town hall is only to be used in the event of a levee breach to notify all residents to evacuate. RREM/CERT members will be trained on how to activate the horn. Please join us to inspect this important piece of safety equipment and visit the RREM/CERT website to read the full Emergency Evacuation Plan.

Join RREM/CERT!

Interested in learning more about Rocky Ripple’s local emergency response team? Join the RREM (Rocky Ripple Emergency Management)/CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) at their quarterly meeting. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 21st at 7:00pm at the Rocky Ripple Town Hall.

Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful spring season.

 Sincerely,

Your Rocky Ripple Town Board & Marshal Mike Kiefer
